Constitutional Changes for Fall ’12

It’s August 26th. Our internships are completed. The Class of 2016 will be on campus NEXT WEEK. Bradley Cooper has left town. It’s true—summer’s coming to an end, but we are just getting started.

We couldn’t wait (because we are so nerdily excited) to inform you that College Council intends to alter its membership via a constitutional amendment. Last semester, College Council voted to change its constitution so that the elected members of CC would more accurately reflect the composition of the student body. Check out that resolution here.

In addition to switching to a class year-based system in which four students will be elected from each of the four classes each semester, new positions will be created specifically to oversee the areas of Community and Diversity, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Student Organizations, and Operations. Additionally, after a very successful trial period this past spring, we will also renew the position of Associate Treasurer in order to deepen our commitment to financial transparency.

College Council has given this a lot of thought, and we’ve decided that it’s time to make these changes, but we need your help to do it. As per our constitution, 1/3 of the student body must approve the reworked constitution that is attached to this email. Voting will begin next Wednesday, September 5th. If the constitutional amendment passes (and we REALLY hope it does!!) the changes will take effect during this coming fall election cycle.

You will be hearing from us shortly as we table in Paresky, at the Purple Key Fair, and contact you in other, more creative ways over the next two weeks. PLEASE send questions, comments, concerns, and I’m-in-need-of-a-clarification e-mails to pjs1 and kmp3. We are also already on campus and we would be more than happy to meet with you!

Safe travels, and see you all soon!
